Architects and designers seek dynamic ways to complement their designs with imagery, shape and eye-catching aesthetics. Today, design professionals have a new option from USG with the Libretto™ gridless metal ceiling system, which creates islands, canopies, radial ceilings and other dynamic shapes custom-tailored to the size, shape and architectural features of a space.
The Libretto gridless metal ceiling system features individually fabricated aluminum panels attached to a hidden steel carrier system. Panels interconnect to form a continuous plane uninterrupted by a traditional grid. Libretto ceilings may be shaped as crescents, serpentines, four-sided polygons, radials and toruses, allowing architects to define space, highlight focal points and provide subtle, sophisticated visual punctuation. The system is finished with a choice of three perimeter trim profiles to achieve the proper scale for a space. Each Libretto ceiling is custom-manufactured complete to require no cutting or fitting by the installer.
Libretto panels are available in solid metal or a choice of three perforation options. The architect specifies perforation shape, size and orientation, then USG customizes the pattern to fit using proprietary technology. Contoured perforation flows with the shape of the ceiling without interruption at panel joints. The custom graphic option allows the architect to create a pattern or provide an image to appear on individual panels or radiate over the entire ceiling without interruption at panel joints. For systems using square and rectangular panels, a selection of 14 standard perforations is available to create a uniform pattern on each panel.

A Libretto ceiling may also be lighted in a variety of ways, creating effects that can showcase the unique qualities of the ceiling itself, highlight details of the space, or play a central role in the design theme. Fixtures can be positioned above the ceiling to create on-directional illumination or to project the perforation pattern onto floors and walls. In addition, low-voltage track lighting or pendant-style fixtures may be attached to the Libretto ceiling surface.
“Libretto empowers architects to harness creativity in designing innovative spaces,” said Graeme Gee, USG’s specialty ceilings business manager. “Our new panel system, combined with perforation and lighting options, enhances traditional designs that mirror an architect’s ideas while offering turnkey installation for a builder.”
Libretto ceilings are currently available in Flat White, Silver Satin, and custom colors upon request, with matching 4”, 6” or 8” perimeter trim. Libretto panels are aluminum, and the carrier system is made of cold-rolled steel.
