DRA family house, a steel construction suspended by querkraft architect

An exceptional view over the city – a small site, on which building guidelines permitted building only in its centre – a slope, too steep for concrete mixers to reach: the frame structure for a daring proposal, up to 2/3 cantilevered out. under the house lies an additional open space. the aluminium skin envelopes both the building and the balcony.

Casa Kike, a private house in Cahuita, Costa Rica by Gianni Botsford Architects

The simple form of the two pavilions of Casa Kike belies the complexity of their geometry. Each pavilion might be described as just two walls, a floor and a roof but is, more technically, a trussed timber shell in the form of an eccentrically-truncated, irregular, four-sided cone. By coupling indigenous techniques and materials with modern design technologies and aesthetics GBA has created this intimate double pavilion for a writer in Costa Rica. A...

Venice Beach Lofts by Steven Ehrlich Architects

Four lofts occupy this tight 60 ft. x 120 ft. site in Venice, California, a half block from the popular and crowded boardwalk. The design concepts of the lofts were to maximize the potential of the small lot and explore how large volumes could extend into the ocean breeze beach environment. By working within the tight constraints of the parcel and a 30-foot height limit, the design explores the concept that four units at 1,900 square feet each can...

700 Palms Residence by Steven Ehrlich Architects

The 700 Palms Residence addresses the freedoms and constraints of residential design in Venice. By maximizing volume, light and privacy on a narrow lot with sensitivity to scale and context, the design presents raw, honest materials appropriate to the grittiness of the Venice environment. The house dissolves the barriers between indoors and out, creating flexible spaces that take advantage of the benign climate. The house expresses a counterpoint...
