Makita LXT600 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless 6-Tool Combo Kit

Wednesday, January 24th 2007

For the tool hound, this is nothing short of happiness in a big box. The pair of 18-volt lithium-ion batteries power each of these gorgeous tools: hammer drill/driver, impact driver, circular saw, recip saw, and angle grinder/cutoff saw, as well as an impressive work light. The 1/2-inch hammer drill/driver puts 560 inch-pounds of torque in your hands, but it’s incredibly lightweight and compact. It’s got three speeds for great efficiency...

PUR-Hose PUR-14X050 1/4 x 50 Polyurethane 250 PSI Air Hose

Monday, January 22nd 2007

This is possibly the best air hose we’ve seen. Light polyurethane construction takes the bulk out of it, meaning easier transport, but it’s super tough and will not kink or crush, no matter how you abuse it. Rubber hoses become difficult to maneuver when the temperature drops, but this one’s light and flexible even in temperatures below zero. You can’t see inside rubber hoses, but this one’s translucent enough to let...

Bosch 4000-07 15 Amp 10-Inch Worksite Table Saw with Folding Stand

Sunday, January 21st 2007

Bosch’s 10-inch Worksite table saw might just be the best of the current bunch. Benchtop table saws–which weigh 60 to 100 pounds and are light enough for one person to carry from the truck to the job site–have increased in popularity in recent years. They set up easily on a workbench or sawhorses and generally feature stable components that make them great for pros and serious hobbyists alike. Although at 60 pounds the Bosch is...

Makita LS1013 Dual Slide Compound 10 Miter Saw Kit

Sunday, January 14th 2007

Riding on a horizontal double-rail system, Makita’s 10-inch dual sliding compound miter saw is one smooth operator. Both rails are self-cleaning and slide on linear ball bearings. The horizontal rail design also seems to give this saw some extra stability, a feature we appreciate, especially in a saw that bevels to 45 degrees both ways. Makita’s saw has a vertical grip design with a thumb-activated safety switch and a paddle trigger,...

Dremel 400-6/90 Series XPR 2 Amp 5,000 to 35,000 RPM Rotary Tool with Multisaw, Flex Shaft and Circle Cutter

Sunday, January 14th 2007

The Dremel rotary tool idea was great to begin with, but now, they’ve revved up the basic rotary tool and added some exclusive attachments that make the XPR series one of the coolest tools we get to try. This one’s got all the bells and whistles of previous models and tackles the same tasks: you can carve, grind, polish, trim, sand, cut a wide range of material, shape, sharpen, clean, remove grout, smooth, drill, rout, sculpt, engrave, strip...

Bosch 1619EVS 15 Amp 3-1/4 Horsepower Plunge Base Variable Speed Plunge Router with 1/4-Inch and 1/2-Inch Collets

Sunday, January 14th 2007

Bosch has combined power and performance to create a plunge router that’s ideally suited for virtually any application. The powerful 3-1/2-horsepower Bosch 1619EVS offers variable speeds of 8,000 to 21,000 rpm and a soft-start feature that minimizes startup torque. With a router this big and powerful, it’s especially nice to have the motor start up gradually, as opposed to jumping to life the way other models do. Complementing the powerful...

Porter-Cable 333K 2.4 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Hook and Loop Sander

Wednesday, January 3rd 2007

Frankly, you can’t go wrong with any of the random orbit sanders made by respected toolcrafters these days; it’s really a matter of brand preference, your budget and what fits your hand most comfortably. This one’s among the least expensive from the big toolmakers, but its features are pretty well matched to its competitors. Its motor is a tad more powerful at 2.4 amps than the crowd, but there’s no discernable difference in use. And like...
