Evapco, international manufacturer of heat-transfer products, offers the Pulse-Pure non-chemical water treatment system for cooling towers. Pulsed, time-varying electromagnetic fields are used to control scale (through precipitation—even at high cycles of concentration), biological growth (through agglomeration and electroporation), and as a result, corrosion (at rates the same as typical chemical water treatment), and water use. Treatment chemicals are eliminated from the facility, drift, and blowdown. As part of its guarantee, Evapco monitors the system’s performance for the first year. Pulse-Pure isn’t appropriate for all water conditions. Power consumption varies; a 500-ton system, for example, uses 4 amps at 120 volts.
