Vermont Natural Coatings uses a by-product of the dairy industry to make PolyWhey, an alternative to conventional polyurethane floor finishes. Using whey protein as the bonding agent, this product has a VOC level of less than 180 grams per liter (about 25 percent lower than the industry’s standard), contains no toxic heavy metals, and, according to the company, has twice the cured hardness of the average water-base finish. A gallon covers 500 to 600 square feet, applied by brush or spray gun with choices of semi-gloss or satin finish, and in five-gallon, gallon, and quart. The cans are made from recycled polypropylene.
