Medite FR medium-density fiberboard (MDF) from SierraPine, for use in interior, non-structural applications where a Class A fire rating is needed, is back. Like the original product that was phased out in 2002, it uses an MDI binder and has no added formaldehyde.
However, it now incorporates a non-toxic, proprietary borate fire retardant mixed in with the wood fibers—not a coating—so the panels can be cut, shaped, and sanded and still maintain their fire-retardant properties. Additionally, SierraPine has earned certification from SCS for using up to 100 percent recovered and recycled wood fiber for its MDF products.
