Hawthorne Street is one of the few streets along the city’s north lakefront that was developed for, and has mostly retained, large single-family residences on large lots. The residences, several of which were designed by prominent architects, offer an interesting variety of architectural styles such as Victorian-era, Arts and Crafts, and Colonial. This Queen Anne-style wood-frame house was built in the 1890s and had been covered with synthetic siding. The owners removed the siding and repaired and restored the wood siding and shingles underneath, installed new windows, and repaired the front porch. The project included a new 2-story rear addition configured to be reminiscent of a historic coach house with an enclosed garage, wood siding, and contemporary fenestration. The Hawthorne Place District was designated a Chicago Landmark on March 26, 1996.
