Baker to Conduct Bridge Type Study for New Kentucky Bridge

Tuesday, August 26th 2008

Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation, has been awarded a $1.1 million contract to conduct a Bridge Type Study for a new bridge to replace the existing U.S. 421 bridge over the Ohio River between Milton, Kentucky, and Madison, Indiana. Additionally, Baker will analyze and provide a rehabilitation report for the existing truss bridge. Baker is performing this work as a subcontractor to Wilbur Smith Associates for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Under the three-year contract, Baker will prepare a bridge type recommendation report for a new roadway bridge approximately 3,200 feet long. This process engages both the general public and a locally based group of select individuals representing the affected communities. Their input will be factored in with cost, constructability and other concerns as a variety of bridges are considered. Each type considered must meet traffic, river navigation and other requirements. Unique to this area is the Historic Landmarks designation for Madison and the bridge types studied will also be sensitive to this issue.

Baker’s J. B. Williams, P.E., vice president and Louisville office principal, said, “We are very excited to not only work on another Ohio River bridge, but also to receive this positive affirmation of our recent, similar work in Kentucky. This project is very important to the continued growth of our Louisville office, and we are proud to contribute to this uniquely historic Milton-Madison community.” In recent years, Baker has been selected to conduct a bridge type study for two new bridges over Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley on U.S. Route 68 in Marshall and Trigg Counties in western Kentucky, as well as to provide bridge type selection and final engineering design services for a new bridge over the Ohio River connecting downtown Louisville, Kentucky, and Jeffersonville, Indiana.
