The sitting-lounging-reclining furniture LAVA designed by Kirsten Hoppert and Steffen Kroll for COR is to receive the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany in Silver. The award will be presented in Frankfurt in February 2009. Managing Director Leo Lübke: “Among the more than 40 awards we have received so far for corporate and design achievements, the ‘award of awards’ is a special appreciation of the innovative strength that COR and Studio Vertijet share.” The internationally active designers from Halle add: “The award for LAVA is affirmation of our uncompromising approach to create products with greater sensuality.”

Flowing forms, variable surfaces and upholstered floor mats: the sculptural seating furniture LAVA from Studio Vertijet departs from traditional norms. Kirsten Hoppert and Steffen Kroll are convinced that “above all the incorporation of the floor as a dimension allows imaginative configurations which invalidate the current definitions of sitting.” Sitting-lounging-reclining furniture? A landscape for living? “Everyone discovers it for themselves”, says Marketing Manager Berthold Strüve, “regardless of age boundaries or cultural preferences – in Europe, America or Asia.” LAVA was presented for the first time at the imm Cologne in 2007, since when it has received accolades such as the Red Dot Award and “Furniture of the Year” from the Swiss magazine “Raum & Wohnen”.

COR and Studio Vertijet have been working together since 2002. The two designers based in Halle also developed the seating furniture Scroll, Nuba, Hob, Ovo and Ovum for the manufacturer. “Together with COR we want to create perfect furniture which speak its own language in unmistakable lines and shapes.” The prizes awarded to Kirsten Hoppert and Steffen Kroll for their work to date include six Red Dot Awards.

Companies cannot actively compete for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany; the nominations are made by the economics ministries and senators of the federal states or by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. A company can only take part in the competition if its product has already received a national or international award. No other award makes such demands: the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany is the ‘award of awards’.
